Business at the Ministry of Energy came to a standstill when an employee was found dead in her office yesterday morning in an apparent case of suicide.
Ms Rose Among, 45, the principal secretary to the director of Energy was found dead in office number 215 at the ministry's head office at Amber House in Kampala.
Sources said Ms Among locked herself in her office on Tuesday evening and took poison. Her workmates said she died on Tuesday night but her body was found on Wednesday morning by the office cleaner, only identified as Gertrude.
Gertrude declined to talk to this reporter. Ms Among was last seen alive in her office at about 1 O'clock, Tuesday. The permanent secretary, Ministry of Energy, Mr Francis Kabagambe Kaliisa said he had received no complaints from the deceased and was at a loss to explain why she took her life.
One of Among's workmates who refused to disclose his names, said the body was found covered in white bed sheets -the deceased had bought on Tuesday morning. Next to the body was a half empty bottle of rat poison.
But some workers at the ministry said Amongo had in the past few weeks become withdrawn. The deceased is said to have left a suicide note but no one could understand the message because the note was in short hand.
Police took the note to experts for interpretation. By press time, Police had not confirmed the cause of the death of the principal secretary. However, police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said the body had been taken to Mulago for a postmortem and that investigations were underway.
"Police has taken the body to Mulago for a technical report. We cannot give any further information until we get a report from doctors," Ms Nabakooba said, on phone.
The body taken by Police to the City Mortuary under tight security.
Among's personal belongings were taken by relatives who were shocked beyond comment. Efforts to get a statement from the Minister of Energy Daudi Migereko were futile as his secretary said he was busy.
