Disused and abandoned port plants and equipment scattered around the ports in Lagos are currently stalling port developmental plan being carried out by A P Moller Terminal.

Speaking to newsmen in Lagos recently, the Managing Director of Mearsk Shipping Line Tim Knudsen said that the developmental plan of Lilypond container terminal that the shipping company has embarked upon is being stalled by about eight disused port plant and equipment.

Mr Knudsen disclosed effort by his organisation to remove the plants and equipment has been rebuffed by securitymen of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) saying that it is the prerogative of the authority to remove anything from the authority.

"Even when we met the management of the Authority, they keep telling us next week and the weeks have ran into several months" he stated.

He explained several promises have been made by authority to remove the heavy machines, adding that the non-removal will slow down the pace of construction work currently going on at the lilypond terminal.

Knudsen who took journalists on an inspection of the development and re-construction of the terminal also disclosed that a total of N1 billion has been earmarked for the development of the terminal which has been divided into five phases.

Beside the developmental that the shipping firm has embarked upon, the foreign shipping line has also modernized its operation at the terminal such that only agents and importers that have business to do at the terminal will gain access into the terminal.

He further explained that the promise by the A.P. Moller group to make Nigerian Ports a world class port will be achieved if the development the firm submitted to the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and (NPA) during the bidding process is strictly adhered within the stipulated time.

He however advised the management of the Ports Authority to engage a wreck removal company so as to remove this equipment and port plant so as to get the burden off its shoulder.

On the traffic situation, Knudsen noted that the heavy traffic problem being experienced by road users is due to the fact that there are object and material on the roads which ought not to be on the roads.
