The Parliamentary Committee on Education Research and Technology will monitor the implementation of the free tuition in secondary schools.

Members of the committee on Wednesday announced the election of Mosop MP David Koech as its chairman.

Mr Koech told journalists at Parliament Buildings that the committee would ensure that the Government fulfilled its promise of free education to secondary school students.

The programme has been launched following the promise made by President Kibaki during last year's election campaigns.

The Government launched the programme in February with a target of raising student enrolment to 1.4 million by the end of the year.

First phase

President Kibaki said the Government would pay tuition fees for students while parents would meet boarding and uniforms costs.

The Government has released about Sh2.5 billion to meet the cost of the first phase of the programme.

Members of the parliamentary committee are Mr David Mwaura Kiburi (Lari), Mr Barnabas Muturi (Kiharu), Mr Peter Gitau (Mwea) and Mr Shakilla Abdalla (nominated).
