State House, Nakasero should become the vice-president's (VP) residence if the Government cannot construct a house for him, MPs have suggested.

President Yoweri Museveni recently occupied the newly-renovated State House, Entebbe but still uses the one in Nakasero.

In a report to Parliament, MPs on the budget committee recommended that the Ministry of Finance release sh7b to construct the vice-president's official residence.

"The country does not have an official home for the vice-president. This denigrates his status and hampers his operations. The committee has always recommended that the VP's residence be prioritised," the report read.

The committee also noted that although a supplementary budget was approved for the completion of CHOGM works, there is still a debt of sh24.5b.

They advised the Government to clear the debt to avoid accumulation of interest and litigation.

The MPs demanded the accountability for the sh8b allocated to the Uganda Investment Authority in the last financial year for the development of the Kampala Industrial Park at Namanve.

"There isn't any development at the site. In spite of this, sh16b was earmarked for the development of four regional industrial parks."

They recommended that sh12b be re-allocated from the sector to other critical sectors.

A total of sh29b is needed for acquisition, development, renovation and maintenance of Uganda's property abroad.

The legislators recommended that the property be managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on a commercial basis.

"The ministry should retain 100% of the rental collections for the upkeep of the property because the private company that manages them asks for money," the report added.

The MPs said development funds be remitted directly to the referral hospitals.

Although the Ministry of Finance allocated sh8b for the hospitals last financial year, some did not get the funds yet the Ministry of Health received it.

The Government has budgeted sh5b for minor repairs on the bridge at the Nalubale dam in Jinja district.
