MPs from northern Uganda have formed an association to advocate for the rights of people in the region. The Greater North Parliament Association comprises MPs from Teso, Karamoja, Lango and West Nile regions. It is chaired by Felix Okot Ogong (NRM), who was elected on Tuesday.
His deputy is Florence Ekwau (FDC), Hassan Fungaroo (FDC) secretary and Isha Otto (UPC) publicity.
The legislators, who addressed journalists at Parliament on Wednesday, said the association, with over 93 MPs, would also have members from the East African Legislative Assembly.
Okot said they would lobby for development funds from the Government and other stakeholders.
The body will also monitor the implementation of projects in the area.
"We want to promote peace and development in the region. Everybody knows the north has lagged behind in development," Okot said.
He added that they would promote cultural unity and advocate for efficient service delivery.
"Projects like the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund have not changed the people's lives. The association will advocate for improvement in the education system, especially for the girl-child and the marginalised people."
The group will also convey messages from the locals to the peace talks team.
Members of the opposition involved in the talks, Otto added, do not efficiently communicate the people's views.

Asked whether he would not use the organisation to intensify his ambitions of becoming president, Okot said: "My presidential ambitions have not yet died, but I cannot use the association to channel for support unless the population decides."
