EMBATTLED pastor William Muwanguzi yesterday said the vehicle, which landed him into trouble with the Police, is not in the country. Muwanguzi of the Holy Fire Ministries in Entebbe said his wife travelled to Beni in the Eastern DR Congo in the Toyota Land Cruiser, which he is accused of stealing.

"The car got some mechanical problems on the way and it is being repaired. It will be transported to Uganda on a carrier," he said.

However, earlier, the Police said he had claimed that his wife, a Congolese, had travelled to Fort Portal for a burial ceremony.

Muwanguzi, who once bought a Hummer with a personalised registration number - Kiwedde (it is accomplished), was on Monday picked by the Police outside the US Embassy in Kampala, where he had gone for a visa.

Muwanguzi, popularly known as Kiwedde, was interrogated at Katwe Police Station for over three hours and later released on bond.

The pastor is expected to report to the Police station on Friday over the vehicle worth sh24m.

Muwanguzi, who claims he has healing powers, allegedly stole the vehicle, which belongs to Michael Sango of Nyendo, Masaka district.

But the pastor said he had a "barter trade" with Sango. "I offered them my Pajero and I promised to top up later. When I got a four-day trip, they placed announcements on radio saying I had disappeared," he said.

He added that when he left for his trip, his wife also travelled to Congo yet she was the one meant to a sign the cheque clear the debt.

Meanwhile, Mustafa Ssemanda, the dealer who sold the car to Muwanguzi, is said to have lied to Sango that the vehicle was sold to people from Europe.

"Initially, Ssemanda hired out the vehicle for over three days at sh2m. He later said the people, who used it, wanted to buy it," Sango's lawyer, Abdalah Kiwanuka said.

"However, we received information that he had given the car to Muwanguzi."

Ssemanda never delivered the Pajero Muwanguzi claims to have given him in exchange for the Land Cruiser, the lawyer added.

The car dealer was arrested and was released on bond recently. Kiwanuka said they were concerned about the circumstances under which Muwanguzi was granted the Police bond.

"Bond is a constitutional right but how sure are we that he will report to the Police station? Anything can happen because he has intentions of travelling abroad."
