Dr. Margaret Musoke Bukenya, the wife of the Vice-President, has decried the increasing number of child mothers in Teso sub-region. She urged donors to help vulnerable mothers to raise their children.

Dr. Bukenya made the appeal while handing over humanitarian assistance to over 300 child mothers in Katakwi and Amuria districts last Thursday.

The items were mobilised by a charity, Mother Support Initiative, Centenary Bank, Kobil and the American Insurance Group.

The donation was aimed at helping the beneficiaries, most of whom are aged 14 and 16, return to school.

They dropped out of school due to early pregnancies. "I look forward to seeing you going back to school. Learning never ends. What we are giving you today is just a small token," she told child mothers in Amuria district.

Bukenya, who is also the chairperson of Mother Support Initiative, urged parents to protect their daughters against early pregnancies and marriages.

"Mothers should take care of the girl-child because their intervention can combat the problem of child mothers."

Katakwi LC5 vice-chairperson Margaret Ikulot blamed the alarming rate of child mothers on insecurity.
