Uganda: Sekagya Makes Cranes Pledge

Uganda's enduring love affair with the Nations Cup and World Cup tournaments has been a roller-coaster of pure agony since 1978, with the intervening years authoring a series of near-misses and abject failures.
Cranes' qualification attempt could however be a different story this time if the string of pledges made during the official launch of the 2010 Nations Cup and World Cup qualifiers yesterday are anything to go by.
As a start, Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya's pledge to figure in each of the national side's fixtures reflected the seriousness in camp. "The reason I returned home early was because we have no time. The previous campaign was a learning experience and we are determined to get it right this time," Sekagya stated.
Sekagya's failure to honour engagements against Niger and Lesotho in the last campaign clearly dented Cranes' hopes of plundering maximum points. Cranes were edged out from qualification for Ghana 2010 on goal-difference by South Africa.
"I had genuine reasons at the time. But nothing of the kind will appear this time now that I am settled in Austria. I am sure we will be stronger," he added.
At the high-profile launch yesterday, Cranes' new kit was unveiled as team sponsors MTN re-affirmed their commitment to the team.
"We will do whatever it takes to support this team," MTN head of marketing Isaac Nsereko stated. The telecommunications giants sealed a four-year sh500m deal with the national soccer side in June last year.

FUFA also pledged to double winning bonuses for the players. "With the World Cup in Africa for the first time, we are really determined to get there," FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa said. He hailed MTN for their support.
