CHANCES of Uganda's leading badminton ace Edwin Ekiring making it to the Beijing Olympic Games dwindled yesterday, after the Badminton World Federation (BWF) entered his name only on the reserves list for the men's singles.

Ekiring, who had broken into the top 100 in the BWF rankings, is now fifth of an eight-man team that is on standby.

"The following players (reserves) may qualify if the above (other top) players are not able to compete," read a BWF statement.

Ekiring's conqueror in the All Africa Games in Algeria, Lasmari Nabil, made it to the games as the best African ranked player. BWF rules call for each continent to be represented by its highest ranked player at the games in case they fail to get one during the selection process.

"Let's pray that something can happen. Only 38 players from the top 100 secured places," said national coach Simon Mugabi, who is currently in Jarkata attending the BWF general assembly.

Ekiring,24, is under the Olympic Solidarity programme that has sponsored him for over a year in the Germany academy.
