GOVERNOR Oserhiemen Osunbor of Edo and the Group Executive Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Chris Ogiemwonyi, were honored weekend with Honorary Doctorate degrees, at the 17th Convocation Ceremony of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma.

The Governor who was earlier installed as the Visitor of the University by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Michael Edokpayi, was conferred with Doctor of Letters (DLitt) while Dr Ogiemwonyi bagged the Doctor of Science degree (D.Sc).

The occasion also witnessed the installation of Chief Sunny Odogwu as the new Chancellor of the University, as well as the installation of the Pro-Chancellor and the Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Ambassador Abdul-Aziz Garuba.

In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Daniel Aigbomian, said the awardees were considered for honours because of their outstanding contributions in their various fields of endeavor, particularly their immense contributions to the growth of the university.

According to him "Professor Osunbor is a man who found no alternative to hard work and who, through steadfastness and determination, is now the toast of the land. He is a politician with a profound missionary vision and regenerative passion, reformist and transformer bent on repositioning Edo State.

Scholar with a demonstrable will for excellence, dreamer whose dreams will not be short-circuited. Man of peace with zero tolerance for violence and producer of more than eight Senior Advocates of Nigeria".

Addressing the congregation, Governor Osunbor who expressed his appreciation for the honor, declared that "the growth and development of this university remained a major priority of my administration, hence since my assumption of office, government has invested a significant amount of the available resources on infrastructural development, staff welfare and accreditation of courses and programmes of the university.

"In pursuant of this objective" he said, "the monthly subvention to the university was increased from N100 million when I came into office to N140 million currently. Furthermore, the sum of N350 million was released to the university to meet the requirements for the accreditation of courses run by the university.

The outcome of this strong intervention was the recent accreditation of over thirty courses run by the university by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
