RESIDENTS of Orogun community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State have raised apprehension over alleged dumping of toxic substance in the community by a contracting firm, working for an oil company in the Niger-Delta just as some suspected cultists invaded Ubeji community and beat up a community leader over land matter.

Vanguard could not authenticate toxic dump accusation, yesterday, but it was alleged that for some years now, agents of the firm had been dumping the said substance into a well, operated by the oil company in the area.

Some of the villagers claimed that the toxic waste was already causing damage to their farmlands and emitting disgusting odour all over the town.

It was gathered that leaders of the community, including the chairman of the Orogun Council of Chiefs, Chief Justice James Omo-Agege (rtd.) have met on the development and the community would make its position on the matter known soon.

Chief Omo-Agege reportedly stated that the community would not accept the degradation and pollution of its environment and urged the environmental regulatory agencies to live up to expectations.

At Ubeji community, it was learnt the Olare-Aja, Pa. T.V.A. Nikanghanri was attacked by the cultists who were armed with cutlasses, axes and other dangerous weapons and left for dead in a pool of his blood.

The septuagenarian was rescued by sympathisers and hidden in a nearby hotel, where the cultists trailed him to and pounced upon him again.
