Nigeria: W'Bank Commences New Projects

Leader of the World Bank Supervision Team in Nigeria, Prof. Folusho Okumadewa has stated that the bank will execute community and social development projects that would address the critical community needs of the Nigerian people in the 36 states of the federation this year.

He stated this, Tuesday , in Enugu when the team visited Gov. Sullivan Chime, explaining that the idea of the project was to take development to the remotest parts of the country. The World Bank team leader stated that local governments were expected to play important roles in the implementation of theprojects "because they are closer to the grassroots". On the Local Empowerment and Environmental Project (LEEMP) which was implemented in nine states, Okumadewa expressed satisfaction with the project in Enugu state.

He said the state had successfully completed projects in 66 of the 94 communities, while those of 57 others were in various stages of completion,adding that the projects executed included 10 educationrelated, 14 water and eight health projects.

He commended the Enugu State Government for itssupport for the project. Responding, Chime said the governmentidentified early enough, the need to work with ruralcommunities that were eager to develop their areas.
