The Federal government yesterday approved the establishment of a working committee for the implementation of the National Plan of Action (NPoA) for the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).
Government also approved the establishment of APRM councils at the state and local government levels. This was the decision reached at the weekly federal executive council, FEC which took place at the presidential villa. The council further approved the next stages of implementation of APRM in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua is to present Nigeria's final report for preview in July summit this year in Cairo, Egypt.
Nigeria voluntarily acceded to APRM in July 2002 and early this year it hosted the Country Review Mission on the verification of the country self assessment report and National Plan of Action which the president will be presenting for preview in July meeting.
The NPoA is government action plan to address the weakness in governance as pointed out by the recent country self-assessment report.
Briefing State House correspondents at the end of yesterday's FEC meeting, minister of state, information and Communications, Ibrahim Nakande who was flanged by minister of national planning, Senator Sanusi Dagash and minister of state, water resources, Demola Seriki, said the memo seeking the approval of the establishment of the implementation committee was submitted by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.
The council, the minister noted deliberated on the president's submission and approved the establishment of NEPAD-APRM working committees at the national level.
The council also approved the establishment of APRM councils at the state and local government levels.

In search of a better Africa, in July 2001, African head of states agreed to enthronement of governance which is seen as the most problematic and as rightly put by the Commission for Africa; it "lies at the core of all African problems". This by many is the "missing link in Africa".
Hence, the present African leaders muted the birth of the African union and the New Partnership for African's Development (NEPAD) as a way of turning around the fortune of the continent.
The goal of NEPAD through African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is to provide the missing link in governance in Africa. This new move has aligned the continent with the happenings in the rest of the continents. The renewed effort to fight the economic and anti-development maniac through APRM is a demonstration of the aspiration of African leaders for good governance.
