Nigeria: Goje Defends Pension Scheme

Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Danjuma Goje, hasdefended his pension scheme for former leaders of the state, explaining that it was in line with report of the National Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

According to a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Adamu Musa Kumo ,Goje said Gombe State Executive Pension (Amendment) Law, 2008 was constitutional, as it was duly passed by the State House of Assembly.

The governor had last week, signed into law the Gombe State Executive Pension Act, which provides monetised benefits to all past leaders of the state to the tune of over N200 million. By the act, former state governors of the state whohave success fully completed their term of office shall receive N200 million, while deputy governors shall receive N100 million.

The law approved provision of a befitting house, motor vehicles, personal aides and free medical care to governor and deputy governors who have successfully completed a term in office.

According to the statement, the report, which is in line with Section 124(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was considered and passed into law by the State Assembly.
