The 3rd Oba Erediauwa Badminton Championship, taking place in Benin City, Edo State, served off yesterday with some qualifying matches to get into the money spinning stage.

Among the state competing for laurels and prizes in the championship are the host state, Edo, Ekiti, Kogi and Ondo. The school teams include Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Benson Idahosa University, Benin, University of Benin, Benin and the Igbinedion University, Okada.

Declaring the championship open, the chairman of the Edo State Badminton Association, Mr. Sam John, welcome the athletes with the promise that they will have a fulfilled game and stay while it lasts. He enjoined the athletes to, "use this championship as a stepping stone to enhance your career in the sport", saying discipline should be their watch word. "If you must grow in the sport, do not cheat, do your best at all times. Be determined and the sky will be your limit".

Meanwhile, Doris Bamidele, the star of the championship has fired the first salvo to her colleagues that she will clinch the first prize of the championship in the female singles. She made the statement yesterday during the qualifying matches while chatting with the press at the Abraham Ordia Indoor Sports Hall of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City. The diminutive, dark complexioned 300 level accounting student of Benson Idahosa University, Benin, based her confidence on her experience which spans eight glorious years on the court. Looking at the field of players in the competition, the player easily raised her hand to say "I will be the first here. I will win the ladies singles".

Doris credentials actually are intimidating where these players are. In the medal chest of the player, one could easily see gold medals from both the National sports Festivals of 2002 hosted by Edo and 2004 held in the capital city of Abuja. There is also the silver medal from the West African University games, WAUG, staged in Ghana recently.

"From the laurels I have won so far coupled with my present form I don't see anybody that can beat me here", she said.
