The home of a Bishopscourt couple was ransacked shortly after they arrived home as an armed gang of thieves gained access via their driveway.

Three men held the husband up at gunpoint, moments after he had activated his remote control gate, drove into his garage and he was about to get out of his car.

They had gained access to the Gloucester Road premises before the main gates could close.

At gunpoint they ordered him to lead them to the house, where his wife, who had arrived 30 minutes earlier, was inside.

The couple had just returned from a book club meeting in Cape Town at about 8pm on Wednesday.

The thieves demanded they open the safe from which they stole an undisclosed amount of foreign currency, jewellery, and a 9mm pistol and a box of ammunition.

They fled the scene in a Mercedes Benz SLK350 and a Mercedes Benz Kompressor, both belonging to the complainants.

At about 11.30pm, police recovered one of the vehicles in Blinder Street in Cape Town.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information can contact Claremont police detective inspector Shafiek Ganief on 021 658 2252 or crime stop 086 001 0111.

Meanwhile, police arrested one of four men allegedly involved in an armed robbery at Barristers Restaurant in Newlands last night.
