More that 10 officers of the Nigerian Prisons Service were Monday evening given the beating of their lives with three of them on danger list when men of the Nigerian Police Force invaded the Nigerian Prisons located at Oko, near Benin.

The policemen numbering about 100, were said to have raided the prisons premises in search of officers alleged to have assault a traffic policeman on duty.

Among the armed men were members of the Special Armed Robbery Squad (SARS), who came in not less than eight vehicles, shooting and beating anybody in sight, demanding that the culprits be produced.

According an eye-witness, trouble started when a female traffic officer stopped a Black-Maria conveying prisoners from the Magistrate's court along Sapele Road, back to the prisons at Oko, an action the warders regarded as unlawful and assaulted the lady for daring to stop them.

The police woman was said to have cried back to her Divisional Police Officer at Adesuwa, who apparently did not take it kindly, and allegedly ordered a revenge.

According to the Prisons Public Relations Officer/Legal Officer, the incident happened at Ikpokpan Round About, by Sapele Road, when a woman police constable at the checkpoint stopped the Black Maria which by law, was wrong.

The Policemen, led by the DPO, came with two officers to report the matter, and the Deputy Comptroller apologised, and pleaded for time to look into the matter, but the DPO insisted that the armed squad that accompanied the Black Maria be handed over to him.

The refusal to hand over the culprits was what triggered off the invasion, which according to witnesses, took place at about 4.00 p.m., when workers were on their way home from work.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Peter Ogboe, denied the invasion.
