Abuja — Given the dubious attitude of manufacturers in China, India and Egypt, the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has said that pharmaceutical products from those countries have to under go thorough screening to ascertain their suitability for human consumption.

"We have unpleasant experience from pharmaceutical products from China, India and Egypt, so we have to place special emphasis on these countries. Any pharmaceutical products coming from China, India and Egypt, have to be subjected to thorough investigations. We are not going to rely on the certificate of analysis of the manufacturers, but also certificate of analysis from our designated analysts," a source from NAFDAC hinted our correspondent.

"The agency has appointed certified analysts to do double cross check of pharmaceutical products from these countries." The head of operations, NAFDAC, Calabar office, Mr. Victor Obiola, said at the Calabar Free Trade Zone (CFTZ) recently, that "We want to make sure that NAFDAC regulated products such as food, drugs, water, chemicals, medical devices etc from these countries must be safe for our people."

He explained that NAFDAC controls the importation, distribution and sales of NAFDAC regulated products. "It is our responsibility to make sure that only products that are fit for human consumption enter through the Ports into Nigeria. If a manufacturer produces products and submits his or her certificate of analysis, he or she has to obtain another certificate of analysis from NAFDAC's accredited analyst before it is allowed into our markets,"he explained.
