Chairman of Nigeria Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO), Chief Best Anekwe, has said that the company will build a refinery before the end of the year.
He said that NIPCO identified with the ongoing reform in the oil and gas industry and would therefore encourage the establishment of more refineries.
"With the reforms, stakeholders will go into refining to make more petroleum products available," he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja.
NIPCO is owned by Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN).
Anekwe did not, however, give details of the proposal, work plan and level of investment.
He said that as the commercial arm of IPMAN, the company was embarking on a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) plant in Benin City, Edo.
"We are coming on stream next month. The scheme is to be commissioned by the end of this month," he said.
The CNG is a gaseous fuel consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons, mainly between 82 per cent and 94 per cent methane. It is pollution-free and suitable for use in automobiles.
Anekwe said the CNG was a cheaper alternative source of energy and a better vehicular fuel than petrol.
He said that the gas pipeline in Benin would serve the CNG plant.
The chairman said that NIPCO had made plans to replicate the CNG scheme in the Eastern and Northern parts of the country.
Anekwe said that the investments were targeted at increased service delivery and products supply nationwide.
He said that upon completion, the plants would augment NIPCO's Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plant in Apapa, Lagos.
"The Federal Government should use us to drive the reforms. They should use us positively in the industry.
"NIPCO is still young at three years. It is upcoming and yet leading in the nation's downstream sector," Anekwe said.
