The Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) has raised alarm on the deepening poverty in the country, saying it is a smear on the character and image of any government and a threat to the stability and corporate existence of a country.
It has therefore tasked the government to focus its economic policy on reviving the ailing rural economy instead of its plan to import rice, saying this would not end the prevalent food crisis in the country.
The party said in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Chief Ben Onyechere that the level of deprivation in the country is unacceptable and insulting to the people of Nigeria.
"The reason for this seemingly uncontrollable level of poverty is as a result of wrong articulation and prioritization of economic policies whereby Government attention has rather been long focused on macro-economic policies due to the fact that government 's economic policies had emanated from merciless neo-capitalist group of investors.
"It has therefore become imperative for the Government to re-establish its readiness to re-route
its economic policies towards the impoverished majority of urban and rural populace through a functional micro economic system that will liberate the deprived lot.
"Government needs to draw attention to basic social welfare schemes that will be an enablement over hunger which is the root cause of violent crimes, because a hungry man is an angry man. "The massive importation of Rice ordered by the Government is not the only way out.

Government must take charge of the rural economy and polity by directly financing community related projects which will create jobs, food and social engagement to the ordinary Nigerians. One of the benefits of this system is decongestion of cities and urban areas since a thriving local economy will attract people back to their localities.
