Star-studded Ilala municipality soccer team yesterday comprehensively demolished Mwanza by a 3-1 score to storm into the quarter finals of the ongoing Taifa Cup championship at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
After yesterday's win Ilala meets the winner of today's match when Coast meet Morogoro at the same venue.
Ilala, comprising most of star players of the city based rival top flight sides, started the match impressively, tormenting the visitors' defense.
Mwanza's Jotina Matei missed a scoring opportunity just after four minutes when he shot wide, fluffing Juma Nade's tailor-made breakthrough pass.
On-charging Ilala were reduced to ten men on the field after referee Judith Gamba sent off defender Mohamed Banka for abusive language, ten minutes after the kick off.
Despite the hiccup Ilala built up attacks and wrestled a penalty six minutes after Banka was sent off, when Hassan was tackled by Ibrahim Job.
However, Mussa Hassan's shot was expertly parried to safety by custodian Noel Lucas.
Mohamed Rajab and Hassan came close to score in the 21st and 24th minutes but their shots were just off target.
Mwanza would have gone ahead after 30 minutes only for Philip Orlando to lose precision with Jotina Matei's through pass.
Lucas worked above the call of duty on the 34th minute to clear a goal-bound shot by Rajab.
Hassan, winning the man of the match award to pocket Sh50,000, broke the deadlock with a glancing header to put his Ilala team ahead on the brink of half time.
Rajab made the spade work on the flanks before floating in a well measured cross above the on-charging striker.
On resumption Mwanza launched clever attacks, with Salum Kanoni of Ilala making a goal-line clearance in the 53rd minute as striker Matei was on the verge of celebrating an equaliser, with Juma Kaseja well beaten.
Mwanza's onslaught paid off after 70 minutes when second half substitute Kamana Salum scored the equaliser, making full use of team mate Oscar Joshua's penetrative pass.
Mwanza's celebrations were short lived as Credo Mwaipopo reclaimed the lead for Ilala barely four minutes after the equaliser. Mwaipopo capitalised on a goal mouth melee to slot home the ball.
With two minutes to regulation time Ilala wrapped up the match as Mohamed Kijuso hammered the final nail.
