STANDARD Bank Namibia renewed its commitment to the development of cricket in Namibia when it made a grant of N$100 000 as well as cricket equipment to the Namibian Cricket Board in Windhoek yesterday.
The grant forms part of a five-year sponsorship totalling N$500 000, which is now in its third year.
According to the president of the NCB, Francois Erasmus, Standard Bank's sponsorship enabled the NCB to start a development programme for highly talented players in 2006.
The programme was aimed at developing the game at U13, U15 and U17 levels, with the aim of becoming the feeder teams for the national U19 and senior teams.
"The programme started off with a training camp in April 2006 and I am proud to say that since that week, players such as Raymond van Schoor and Sean Silver have made it into the national team as well as the Under-19 team that competed in the Junior World Cup in Malaysia," Erasmus said.
He added that the national cricket coach Johan Rudolph had undertaken to head the programme for highly talented young players.
NAMIBIA TAKE ON ZAMBIA The donation comes at an opportune time, ahead of this weekend's Under-15 Africa Cup match between Namibia and Zambia at the Wanderers field on Saturday.
This will be followed by a friendly match between Namibia B and Zambia at the same venue on Sunday.
The wining team will qualify for the ICC Africa U15 Championships in South Africa later this year when they will be involved in a tri-nations tournament against the winners of the Central and Northern African qualifying competitions.
The NCB is also planning to arrange two tours to Namibia for its U13 team in July and September, while its U17 team will play a regional tournament in South Africa in August.
"By then all possible talent in the country, from 11- to 17-year-olds, will have been identified, placed on a database, divided into practice squads, have training programmes and coaches in their respective regions in place and will be monitored by Rudolph," Erasmus said.
"The NCB is extremely grateful to Standard Bank for the vision that they have shown to commit to the programme," he added.
The Namibian squad to play Zambia on Saturday, starting at 09h00 at the Wanderers field, is as follows: Dehann Landsberg, Christopher Coombie, Wian van Vuuren, Jason Davidson, Gerhard Lotter, Edwin Reed, Tiaan Rabe and Gerhard Erasmus (Windhoek); Zhivago Groenewald, Sholako Groenewald and Nian Grobler (Walvis Bay); and Christiaan Labuschagne (Gobabis).
