The President of the African Development Bank (ADB), Donald Kaberuka, on Thursday pledged that the bank will step up its support for Mozambique.

He was speaking at the end of a courtesy call on President Armando Guebuza. He did not specify in any detail what further assistance might be forthcoming from the Bank, but told reporter "I promised more support from the ADB for the activities that the Mozambican government is undertaking".

Kaberuka said he was "very pleased" to be in Mozambique which is hosting this year's annual meeting of the ADB group. He was glad that he had been able see the progress that Mozambique has achieved over the years of its cooperation with the ADB. Over the past 30 years, ADB loans to Mozambique have amounted to about 1.2 billion US dollars.

In his meeting with Guebuza, "we discussed what we can continue doing so that Mozambique will go on making progress", Kaberuka added.

He also stressed that, if African states are to confront successfully the current international food crisis, they must produce more food, which involves allocating the necessary resources so that peasant farmers can increase thir productivity.

"The long term solution is to ensure that our farmers are supported, so that our production increases", Kaberuka added.
