Some 1,654 fire-arms of various types were handed over voluntarily, by citizens owning them illegally, to the National Police in the northern Uige Province, from April up to the present date, said Thursday the province's deputy governor for organisation and technical services, Miguel Cutoca.

Speaking to ANGOP, Miguel Cutoca, who is also coordinator of the provincial commission for disarmament, said that during this period several ammunitions were equally handed over.

He said that the citizens are collaborating positively to the appeals of the authorities to hand over these means to the National Police, guaranteeing that the government will continue to sensitise people to participate in the campaign.

"Angolans are working for a common good, which is peace.

Therefore, everyone should collaborate each one in his way", he underlined.

According to him, the country needs a peaceful and healthy environment, where all citizens can work for their development, social and economic stability.

He said that the development of Angola passes through the consolidation of peace, that is why citizens in illegal possession of fire-arms hand them over voluntarily, aiming at preserving this good.

Meanwhile, Miguel Cutoca announced the holding on Friday of a workshop on disarmament of citizens illegally owning fire-arms, in which representatives of political parties, churches, chieftain and NGOs will participate.
