On 10 May 2008, Austere Malivika Yalala, a journalist with Radio Télévision Nationale Congolaise's (RTNC) local Butembo and correspondent for the South Africa-based Radio Canal Afrique, received a death threat.
The caller, who introduced himself as Captain Ndaliko of the Congolese Party of Resistance (PARECO, an armed group based in eastern RD Congo), said: "I will kill you before the International Criminal Court arrests us."
On 14 May, the journalist told JED that this threat is probably related to the broadcasting, on 23 April, in the morning news edition of Canal Afrique, of an interview with three child soldiers who fled the PARECO confrontations in Kirumba (110 km north of Butembo). The child soldiers described the mistreatment to which they were subjected by their superior officers, including a certain Lafontaine and Ndaliko.
The journalist stated that he feared for his life in Butembo, which is considered very unsafe at the moment.
