Uganda: Massa's Jomo Cosmos Relegated

Johannesburg — Cranes striker Geoffrey Massa will have to endure the agony of rubbing shoulders with less talented players next season after his South African club Jomo Cosmos were relegated to the National First Division on Wednesday night.

Massa was introduced in the 64th minute by club owner and head coach Jomo Sono but his presence on the field yielded no fruit as Cosmos crumbled to a 2-0 loss to Black Leopards at the Orkney Stadium.

Both sides were involved in the relegation dogfight but the defeat together with the fact Durban based side Thanda Royal Zulu FC's 3-2 win over BidVest Wits means that Massa's team is now four points adrift of second-bottom Leopards.

"All season we have been unlucky. There are games we should have won by four goals and three goals but the number of times we hit the woodwork and missed half chances tells the whole story. Now we have to deal with the fact that we will play in the Mvela League next season," he lamented.

Myron Shongwe and Thabiso Hlalele scored for the Leopards who still have to win their last match of the season on Sunday to stay in the Absa Premiership.

Jomo Cosmos saw their attacking fire power reduced when striker Nkosinathi Nhleko was red carded in the first half.

Elsewhere, a David Obua-less Kaizer Chiefs side continued its good form and cemented its place in the Super 8 of the Absa Premiership with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Timothy Batabaire's Bloemfontein Celtic.

Despite not fielding Cranes custodian Dennis Onyango, Supersport United took a giant step towards the 2007/08 Absa Premiership title with a convincing 2-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Super Stadium.

The South African contingent of Ugandan professionals confirmed that they would arrive in Uganda on Wednesday, May 21 ahead of the 2010 World Cup opening fixture against Niger on May 31 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
