Kampala — Renowned disc spinner Kiberu Shiru a.k.a DJ Shiru is back in town all smiles after completing the first quarter of his UK tour last week with a big award.
The 23-year old Shiru was named by the UK-based Ugandan Eyecon Magazine's readers' poll as "DJ of the Year," beating off stiff competition from a number of UK-based DJs.
The youthful former Club Silk top disc-spinner played in a couple of nightclubs and at concerts in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark and Holland.
Shiru also won a couple of recognition awards from the East African community in South Africa and Nigeria where he played alongside South African international DJ Fresh and also played in a couple of nightclubs.
On returning home, Shiru was crowned Uganda's "Wickedest DJ of the Year" for the second year running by the fast-rising Buzz Teeniez Awards held at Lugogo Cricket Oval the previous week.
DJ Shiru, who started disc spinning in the late 90s after picking a leaf from his big brother DJ Rota, started his journey to top the local DJs' list after launching his own record label called Shirumatic PRO in 2000.
Shiru delved into the regional market after entering the much contested East African DJ competitions held in Nairobi Kenya four years ago, where he won an accolade for best new entrant.
With quite distinctive disc-spinning skills, the soft-speaking DJ has played at several concerts as well as top local discotheques including Club Volts, Ange Noir and Club Silk where he won a majority vote by Club Silk patrons to be crowned the pioneer discotheque's top DJ for 2006/2007.
