While on his visit to Uganda, Senegalese Superstar Akon joined Celtel Uganda in a social responsibility campaign.

Akon handed over assorted textbooks to the staff and pupils of Nakivuubo Primary School in Kampala on May 9 at Celtel House on Wampewo Avenue.

The excited pupils sang for Akon the legendary school anthem- 'We young women and Men of Uganda...' before breaking into a humorous poem about examinations.

Their good performance not only impressed Akon, but the Nigerian singing duo P-Square too plus all people present including pressmen.

Akon joined Mr Yesse Oenga, Celtel's managing director and other Celtel directors, to hand over the books to the school's deputy headmaster, Mr Joseph Okanya and some of the pupils of the school. The smiling faces of the children could clearly show their excitement.

"We are very happy to see Akon and we thank him for giving the books to our school. We shall never forget this day," one of the pupils said.

The Build. Our Nation campaign is Celtel's social responsibility campaign in which text books and scholastic materials are donated to selected UPE primary schools across the country.

Nakivubo Primary School received 200 textbooks and two computers. On his part Akon identified with these children, saying he was once like them and hoped that by seeing the far he had come they would be inspired to succeed in whatever they chose to do.

Akon through his foundation called Konfidence built an elementary school in his home country - Senegal to support school going children in achieving an education. Mr Oenga said, "We at Celtel are proud to partner with a multi-platinum star, Akon, in supporting education and the future Uganda's children with scholastic materials that will help to improve on their studies."

Celtel is currently visiting schools in the central region giving out different scholastic materials.

By the end of this phase of the campaign some 16,000 text books worth 200 million shillings will have reached some 80 schools in 80 districts in Uganda.
