Uganda: Massa's Jomo Cosmos Relegated

Kampala — ONE big objective behind Geoffrey Massa's money-spinning transfer to South African club, Jomo Cosmos, was to guarantee both silverware and a route to Europe. Yet with just a season into his three-year contract with the club, the 22-year-old's well-laid plans have seemingly backfired.

The Cranes striker was left astounded on Wednesday night after Cosmos were relegated to the national First Division following a 2-0 defeat to Black Leopards at the Orkney Stadium.

Coupled with Thanda Royal Zulu FC's 3-2 win over BidVest Wits, Cosmos were left stranded at the bottom of the table, four points adrift of second-bottom Leopards.

"This is the worst spell in my career. We were just unlucky throughout this season with chances not coming our way," he said.

Massa joined Cosmos last year after winning a protracted transfer battle with Egyptian club El Shams. He joined Cosmos for US$150,000 (sh248m), with the hope of re-igniting his previous intended moves to either Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon or French club Lille.

His three-year contract at El Shams that was due to expire this summer, however, held a clause that Cosmos chief executive Jomo Somo exploited to lure him. The clause allowed the striker to move if a top side showed up with a respectable offer.

Massa intends to exploit the same clause that was included in his contract with Cosmos to secure an escape route from the club this summer.

"There is a way out in my contract. We will talk over it. My plans were playing top-flight and not amateur football," he said.
