Uganda: Like Harriet, Like Maria Kisakye

Kampala — MANY who have heard her songs on radio have mistaken her for singer Harriet Kisakye. This has not been helped by the striking resemblance of the two singers. It is just as well because Maria Kisakye is Harriet Kisakye's younger sister. As it is, they share much more than just looks and voice.

Maria is the new kid on the music scene with her six-track debut album, Onchapa, all done in Afro beat band style. Other songs on the album include, Ndayira, Maama, Nakusiima, Nkwesize and Gwe Wange.

"I sing mostly about love, except in one song, Maama, where I sing about my mother," Maria says.

"I recorded all the songs at Mesach Ssemakula's Khann Records. My producer was David Ssennyonga," Maria says.

A civil engineering student at Kyambogo University, Maria, has been in love with music since her childhood. However, her elder sister, Harriet Kisakye, held her back, wanting her to concentrated on her studies.

"When I reached university, I discussed my musical ambitions with Harriet because I thought I was mature enough to juggle my studies with music," Maria says.

"Harriet ensured that my songs come to life. She even paid my recording fees," she adds.

Speaking of her sister, Harriet Kisakye says: "Maria has not disappointed me. I knew she would make it."
