Uganda: Kampala Woman MP Calls for Safety Law

Kampala — THE Government should come up with a fire safety law that makes it one of its security obligations to the citizens, Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Sempala has advised.

"The public has a right to safety," Sempala said while touring the Fire Masters offices in Kibuli on Tuesday.

She added that safety precautions were lacking and whenever a fire breaks out, it is left to the Police to put it out.

Martin Stokes, the managing director of Fire Masters, observed that the country lacks fire-fighting equipment.

He said in 1969, Kampala had 2,417 fire hydrants but today it has less than 100.

Hydrants are water points specifically meant for fighting fires.

Stokes noted that it was the responsibility of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation and Kampala City Council to ensure that hydrants were available.

He pointed out that the water points must be on the road sides for them to be easily accessed in case of a fire outbreak.
