Uganda: Kampala Authorities to Save School Plots

Kampala — KAMPALA City Council will ensure that primary schools get land titles, the director of education, Anne Galiwango, has said, writes Juliet Waiswa.

She explained that the council had asked the Government to enable schools buy the plots to avoid relocation and evictions.

A total of 83 government-aided schools in the city lack land titles.

The Uganda Land Commission issued titles to only Nakasero, Kitante and Buganda Road primary schools.

During a recent council meeting, Kampala Central councillors said some people had encroached on the Kamwokya Primary School plot.

Frank Mbazira, a councillor of Kamwokya II Parish, said the parents and the school administration were worried that the plot might be grabbed.

"The squatters, who were compensated by the city council when the school bought the land, are still living there and others are selling it off," Mbazira said.

Recently, the land commission warned that school plots should not be sold to investors of other businesses.
