PUBLIC land should be known, zoned and transparently competed for, regardless of which body oversees it, a procurement official has said.

"There is a problem with the land, which is categorised as public land.

"This is a public asset, but only a few people in this country know where it is and how one can invest in it. We think public land should be zoned and let out on a competitive basis," said Edgar Agaba, the head of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA).

Agaba was on Wednesday speaking during the 8th sector review workshop at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

He blamed corruption for the continued failure of public procurement.

He hoped that the Government acts on PPDA's recommendations.

"I know the Auditor General laments over lack of implementation by the Government of his own recommendations.

"While management of land is written in the Constitution, the Constitution does not prohibit transparent management of it," Agaba told the participants.

He said there was need to step up the PPDA investigations to cover all complaints.
