Nigeria: Efurokpe Community Threatens PPMC Operation

OIL impacted Efurokpe community in Ethiope West council area of Delta State, has threatened to disrupt the operations of the Pipeline Products Marketing Company, PPMC, a subsidiary of the NNPC, if they fail to send relief materials to the community and take immediate steps towards the cleaning up exercise of their devastated environment to save their lives and economy.

The community claimed that a spill from the PPMC pipeline occurred on April 13, 2008 that has affected their living standards, economy and they duly informed the company which promptly responded with a visit to clamp the source of leakage that the community said was as a result of equipment failure.

In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of the PPMC, Warri and copied to the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, Warri, NOSDRA, by counsel to the the Ijegbo Efurokpe community, Edward.O. Ekpoko, Esq., they said officials of the PPMC visited the site to see for themselves, appealed to the people for calm and promised to take steps to address their plight only to now abandoned them till date.

They are therefore calling for the immediate clean-up of the spilled crude and relief materials to alleviate their suffering just as they called for a discussion on issues of damages suffered and consequential compensation.

When Vanguard sought comments from the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Warri the officer in charge was said to be away for more pressing assignment while the Head of NOSDRA in Warri said he was not aware of any spill in the area as the PPMC has not contacted his office but promised to look into the matter with urgency.
