Tanesco customers can now pay their electricity bills with CRDB bank cards following the launching of the service in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Tanesco customers would be able to pay electricity bills through tembo cards regularly used by the bank's customers, while non-CRDB bank Tanesco clients would pay their bills to bank cashiers.

Speaking at the contract signing ceremony Tanesco managing director Dr Idris Rashidi said the exercise would reduce disturbance and save time for customers having to endure long queues at Tanesco bills payment offices.

"We are now automating our billing system and our future objective is to see paying electricity bills all over the country is made through banks, leaving Tanesco focusing on service provision," he said.

Tanesco is also working to facilitate online bill payments through the internet, while preparing a customer service charter that will enable customers to make claims on damage or undelivered services, on the basis of the charter.

CRDB bank managing director Dr Charles Kimei said the bank had agreed to provide the bills payment services in order to provide its customers with more innovative products.

"There is high competition now in the banking industry and without innovation it is difficult to survive," he said.
