Tanzania joined the whole world yesterday in marking what has dubbed the International Day of the Family.

And to underline the significance attached to the day by the global community, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent out a special message urging men to shun all forms of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

The UN chief could not have given more appropriate advice.

He singled out men because they are the heads of families, at least, in the African tradition.

Rising cases of violence in the home have adverse effects on many families today.

One of these is the growing number of street children swarming all over urban areas. And Tanzania is no exception.

A number of measures have been taken by the to rid streets of these hapless and helpless children.

They, include taking them to orphanages, but the problem persists as these are not only inadequate, but also mostly ill equipped.

The problem is more often than not lack of funds to run them and, therefore, lack of facilities, including staff to man them.

All said, however, the root cause of the problem starts with the family.

And that is why it's important to heed to the advice of the UN boss, especially to men, who are the main culprits, to shun violence in the family.
