Nigeria: Why We Desire Our Own Varsity - Abdullahi

Hammed Shittu

16 May 2008

Ilorin — Kwara State Commis-sioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, has said the desire of the state to establish a state-owned university is to produce graduates that would be able to compete for global job opportunities.

Abdullahi, who spoke with THISDAY in his office yesterday, shortly after participating in the monthly ministerial press briefing of his ministry, said the present situation in the training of young graduates in the nation's universities is retrogressive, as most of the products cannot compete with those from other countries of the world.

He said if one looks at current development in some of the universities in the country, the academic programmes offered cannot withstand world class assessment, which has led to increase in unemployment rate.

He said by the time the university commences academic work, its curriculum would be world standard, to prepare its products for the task ahead and boost the schools' status.
