Four suspected thieves hijacked a Beitbridge-bound haulage truck after attacking its driver and drained 60 litres of fuel before the vehicle plunged into a river near Masvingo on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred at the 270km peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road at around 9pm. Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Phibeon Nyambo confirmed the incident. The suspects attacked the driver of the truck Mr Sydney Murambiwa who was travelling with one passenger when he stopped to check on the truck's wheels that were binding.
Insp Nyambo said Mr Murambiwa was struck with an empty beer bottle by one of the four suspects who emerged from a nearby bush. The four got into the truck and drove away with the passenger, a woman, leaving Murambiwa unconscious. "The suspected thieves then drove off Masvingo Road into Mayo Road. They stopped after driving for two kilometres and drained 60 litres of fuel that they sold to villagers in the area before proceeding with their journey," Insp Nyambo said.
He said after travelling for about seven kilometres they came to a narrow bridge and the driver failed to control the truck and it plunged into the river. "The four, who escaped with minor injuries, took away clothing and other valuables belonging to Murambiwa and the female passenger worth over $30 billion," Insp Nyambo said.

One of the men tried to rape the woman but was restrained by his accomplices. The woman also sustained minor injuries. The truck driver is recovering at a hospital in Harare while investigations are underway.
