The Government Delegate to the defunct Bamenda Council, now City Council, Abel Tadzong Ndeh, has decried the harassing and extorting of money from local councils by the Provincial Service for Territorial Administration and Decentralisation.
Abel Ndeh has been furious following an interview Henry Shey, Northwest Chief of Council, granted The Post insinuating that Ndeh is not the City Council Delegate until he is reappointed.
Abel Ndeh, in a speech on the installation of Northwest Regional Executive of the United Councils and Cities recently, accused Shey and his service for harassing and extorting money from councils. He appealed to Territorial Administration and Decentralisation Minister, Marafa Amidou Yaya, through the Governor, to check the misdeed of the service.
Ndeh equally called on the Governor to look into the difficulties plaguing councils, especially about the 0.5 per cent of levy of the administrative accounts payable to local councils per year "We municipal authorities pray the Hon. Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation to reconsider the old rates, which existed before the Decision No 001/D/E/GNW68/SG/PSLC of 13/01/05 instituting 0.5 percent because this would reduce the financial burden of the poverty stricken local councils of the province, which makes it difficult to pay staff salaries."
However, reacting to Ndeh's accusations against the Provincial Service of Councils, the newly installed Regional President of United Councils and Cities, UCCC, Jonie Agogo, expressed dismay and dissociated himself from the declarations. He maintained that his working relationship with the Provincial Service of Councils has been very cordial.
Earlier, Northwest Governor, Abakar Ahamat, while commissioning Agogo and his team at the helm of UCCC, said UCCC executive should protect the interest of all the councils, re-enforce decentralisation and unite the efforts of the population and create a forum for dialogue with stakeholders.
This, to Abakar, can only be achieved if UCCC establishes a permanent relationship with the government structures to promote good governance. He also called upon UCCC executive to be current in order to implement and execute decisions that will go a long way to help the population out of poverty.
The Northwest UCCC Regional Office Executive comprises of the following; Jonie Agogo as President, Bernard Tossam Vice President, Jerome Ngum Secretary General (1) and Simon Achou (SG2) and Jonas Ebou, Balick Awah as Advisers.
