Uganda: Robbers Arrested With MP's Pistol

Kampala — Police have arrested a robber who is among the suspected racket of thugs that has been terrorizing Kampala, with a pistol belonging to a member of parliament.

The Regional Police Commander in Charge of Kampala Extra, Edward Ochom who was appearing on the KFM Hot Seat Thursday evening said the gun belongs to Luuka county MP, Meddie Mulumba.

He said the MPs' gun was stolen last month after thugs put him on a gun point as he was entering his house in Kawempe.

"They took the fire arm from him as he was entering the gate. I think he was careless; he had put it in the car instead of putting it on his body," he said.

Mr Ochom said Mr Mulumba's gun is among the four recovered firearms from the 846 suspects arrested in the last one and half weeks.

Kampala is currently experiencing a storm of murders and other crimes like rape and robberies. The areas most affected are Ntinda, Kiwatule, Kisaasi, Bukoto and Kulambiro.

Asked whether the army should boost police in search for the thugs, Mr Ochom said police is in control "and we don't need any extra help."

In a similar incident, two girls aged 16 and 18 were raped in the same suburb after robbers broke into their house. Meanwhile, Rapid Response Unit yesterday arrested 214 suspects who have been terrorising the different parts of the country.

Thirty two of them were from Kampala, 71 from Mbarara, eight from Kumi, 13 from Nakasongola, five from Mityana, 43 from Kiruhura, 33 from Lyantonde, eight from Bushenyi and five from Sembabule.
