Nairobi — Twelve members of Parliament Sunday vowed that nothing would stop them from agitating for the formation of a grand opposition in Parliament.

They said the quest for the formation of the grand opposition was unstoppable and no amount of pressure from the Government side will make them think otherwise.

The MPs said no amount of threats would deter them, arguing that the quest for the opposition was like river Nile and those opposed to it would be swept aside.

"No amount of threats will stop us from forming the grand opposition. Our quest for it is like river Nile and those who oppose it will be swept aside," Mr Cyrus Jirongo said.

The MPs were speaking at Meswondo Primary School in Konoin constituency in Bureti District during a drive to raise funds for Meswondo Secondary School.

A total of Sh 411,000 was raised.

They vowed not to ditch their parties but to fight from within.

The MPs were Dr Julius Kones (the host), Cyrus Jirongo (Lugari), Zakayo Cheruiyot (Kuresoi), Ababu Namwamba (Budalangi), Fred Kapondi (Mt Elgon), Mithika Linturi (Igembe South), Kiema Kilonzo (Mutito), Charles Kilonzo (Yatta), Lucas Kigen (Rongai), Isaac Ruto (Chepalungu), Magerer Langat (Kipkelion, assistant minister for Energy) and Charles Keter.

Bureti county council chairman, David Langat also attended the meeting.

The MPs said they feared that two principals in the coalition government - President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga - may agree to do things that were not good for the country, hence the need for the opposition to provide checks and balances.

"The PNU and ODM principals may agree to run this country the way they want and without opposition in parliament for checks and balances, things will automatically go wrong in this country," Mr Linturi said.

The MPs said they were not making noise because they were not appointed to the Cabinet.
