Uganda: Local Guards Abroad Remit Sh110b Annually

UGANDA has 6,118 guards working abroad.

They send home $60m (about sh110b) per year, according to labour state minister Mwesigwa Rukutana.

He was responding to queries raised by MP Ssebuliba mutumba about the welfare of Ugandans doing menial jobs abroad. MPs said guards claimed that on recruitment, their contracts were altered, with firms only giving them part of the pay they had been promised.

There are 17 agencies recruiting for such jobs, six of which had secured big contracts, according to the ministry. They are toolmiles PR, with 150 guards in Juba and 116 in the United Arab Emirates, Connect financial services, with 729 in Iraq, Askar Security with 1,950 in Iraq, Desha Enterprises, with 2,453 in Iraq, Gideons Men, with 220 in Iraq and Water tight Services with 617 guards in Iraq.

Rukutana said before recruiting, companies are required to submit job orders for the ministry's approval and applicants must be above 18.

"They must have suitable documents and no criminal record.

There must be emergency treatment facilities, workers compensation, war benefits, contracts for non-combat guarding and guards must not be exposed to war hazards," he said.
