Nairobi — Three Kenyans are among the crew of a ship that was hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia on Saturday.
The Jordanian vessel had 12 crew members, including a Tanzanian, several Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Somalis.
The hijacking of mvVictoria, is the third such incident to be reported in Somalia in the last five months, said Mr Andrew Mwangura, the programmes co-ordinator of the Seafarers Assistance Programme, a Kenyan association for workers in the marine industry.
Reports indicated that the vessel owned by an Arab Emirates company was carrying 4,200 tonnes of sugar donated by Denmark to Somalia.
The vessel was seized about 40 nautical miles off the capital, Mogadishu.
"Pirates on three small boats boarded the Jordanian-flagged vessel and she is now moving North towards Hobyo some 500 kilometres north of Mogadishu," said Mr Mwangura.
Military officer
And in Nairobi, gangsters shot a military officer in a carjacking incident in Kinoo area Sunday.
The officer was admitted at the Forces Memorial Hospital with an injury in the leg.
He was in the company of a friend, an Administration Police officer, when three gunmen blocked a car they were driving in at about midnight.
Separately, detectives are yet to unravel last week's killing of a policewoman and her two sons in Gatundu.
Detectives have been following multiple clues including the possibility of a family feud and revenge attack but have so far not established the motive behind the Tuesday incident.
Ms Lucy Wanjiku, who was a constable at Thika police station was shot five times. Her sons George Musembi, 36, and Michael Njuguna, 28 were also gunned down.
The detectives are also investigating possible links to a similar incident last October in which Ms Wanjiku's co-wife was also shot dead by gangsters.
