Liberia: Reconsider Haddah Group of Companies

The National Brotherhood of Teamster Union of Liberia (NBT-Liberia) is calling on the Government of Liberia to rethink its decision by allowing the Haddad Group of Companies to once again commence the importation of rice.

Recently the President of the union, Mr. J. Nyemah Natt, Sr. told journalists that the union which has been an advocacy body for the drivers of that company has suffered serious setback with almost nine hundred persons who were all drivers and employees of that company who are jobless now and can hardly cater to their family.

He noted that as part of the union's function especially in the interest of its members, they are appealing to the national government to reconsider the Haddad Group of Companies, so as to enable the over nine hundred jobless members return to job.

The NBT boss however assured its member that it would tirelessly engage the Government as a means of seeking the welfare of the union and its members in general.

He also announced that the Union and the Management of the Prestige and Alliance Motors Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will enable both groups forge partnership.

Mr. Natt further noted that it would be very difficult for the MOU to materialize especially when the company is not fully operating and its members are not working

According to the MOU, the two companies and the Union are to extend the Union and Management Agreement Contract for two years commencing from March 1, 2008 to March 2010.

The companies and the Union also agreed to grant studies or Educational Training leave with pay to employees covered by the agreement for both National and International conferences. Under the agreement, management would sponsor her employees selected by the union with air tickets and one month allowance of US$1,000.00 as per diem.

According to the agreement, the two companies and the Union agreed to increase transportation fare by US$2.00 due to the high increase in petroleum and employees covered by the agreement would now receive L$900.00 per diem per month.

The companies and union agreed to increase the price of rice by US$6.00 due to government's stipulated price and employees covered by the agreement would receive US$26.00 per month

The companies and the Union also agreed to increase salaries and wages based upon the productivity of each employee and that those employees to benefit are supervisors. Senior, and Junior Helpers and Office Maintenance are covered by the agreement. The two parties agreed to provide uniforms, rain gears including safety boots and first aid kits at work site.

The MOU stated further that all employees of the companies are union members, except for those employees who are managerial staff and that the Union's dues paid to the Union should be attached with names of employees covered by the agreement.

Signing on behalf of the companies were George E. Haddah, Chairman Haddah Group of Companies, Elias A. Haddah; General Manager Prestige Motors Corporation, Mrs. Caroline O. Kun; Financial Comptroller Alliance Motor Corporation(AMC) and Quijuie Brown; Shop Steward AMC/ PMC.

Greetings:

I am wondering if the Union has exhausted other ways and means of seeking employment for the 900 drivers. There are so many new companies now in Liberia.

If they have and still find that all of the 900 drivers cannot be employed then the next point will come into play.
