COMMODITY prices are determined by the market forces of demand and supply and not by the the Government, a senior official has clarified.

"Following the liberalisation policy of Government being implemented by the ministry, the prices of commodities in the country are determined by market forces of demand and supply without Government intervention," said Raymond Agaba, acting commissioner of the internal trade department of the Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry.

He was reacting to press reports that the Government had issued prices for consumer goods in a bid to fight corruption in public offices.

Meanwhile, the Uganda National Farmers' Federation (UNFF) has warned that the current rise in food prices due to shortage will continue if the Government does not address issues hindering production, such as access to markets, report Raymond Baguma and Donald Kiirya.

"Increased agricultural production is not about harvesting volumes if farmers have no linkage to the markets. We call on the Government to support farmers in improving the infrastructure," said Kibaale MP Frank Tumwebaze, who is also the UNFF president.

"Community roads are still a problem. Only five percent of community roads in the country are classified as fair. This means that eighty-five percent of rural areas are inaccessible," Tumwebaze noted.

He asked the Government to extend assistance to groups so that organised farmers could help others get organised as well.

He added that the increase in prices due to food scarcity was slowly having a trickle down effect on farm-gate prices, with the price of a kilogramme of maize rising to sh400 from sh150 in some areas of his constituency.
