Mozambique: Call for World Recognition of Bay of Pemba

19 May 2008

Pemba — Hundreds of residents of the northern Mozambican city of Pemba marched through the city to Wimbe Beach, one of Pemba's main tourist attractions, on Sunday, in support of the call for the Bay of Pemba to be admitted to the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club.

A team of experts is currently in Pemba to judge whether or not the bay meets the conditions for admission to the Club. The head of the team, Michelle Pauly, told AIM, that she had been impressed by the bay, particularly by how little of it has been urbanized.

"We found that there are good conditions for this bay to enter the club", she said. "Urban areas have not yet occupied much space along the bay, and this helps its conservation".

The official decision on whether the Bay of Pemba will be admitted to the Club will be taken later this month. The Club was set up in Berlin in 1997, and has close ties with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The development plans of Pemba Municipal Council stress areas which overlap with several of the main concerns of the Club. The Council's plans concern such challenges as preserving the environment, promoting local culture, defending the natural state of Pemba beaches, and protecting the corals found in the bay and marine species at risk of extinction.

The Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club has the mission to promote natural beauty, culture and the environment, through a variety of incentives to protect the bays that are its members. Efforts to win membership of the club for the Bay of Pemba have been under way since 2002.
