Kenya: Passengers Robbed of Sh180,000 in Raid

20 May 2008

Nairobi — Passengers in a Bungoma-bound bus were robbed of Sh180,000 and 15 mobile phones.

Five gangsters boarded the bus in Nairobi posing as passengers but on reaching Gilgil, they hijacked it and drove towards the Elementaita earth road where they robbed the passengers of money, mobile phones and other valuables.

Arrested

The incident happened at the weekend.

The police responded quickly and arrested three gangsters as they fled from the scene. "We mounted an intensive search and rounded up three suspects believed to have staged the 3.00am robbery," area police commander Willy Lugusa said.

The three, he said, were helping the police with information likely to lead to the arrest of their accomplices.

Meanwhile, swift action by neighbours at the weekend saved a Nyahururu electrician who had been kidnapped by gangsters.

Mr Peter Maina was accosted by the gang at 7.30pm as he waited for the gate to his house to be opened.

The gangsters fired once in the air before dragging him out of his vehicle.

Residents who responded to the alarm raised by Mr Maina's family pursued the gangsters, who abandoned the electrician and fled.

In another development, three people were at the weekend arrested on suspicion of being cattle rustlers.

A home-made gun was recovered at Lorian in Laikipia West District.

District commissioner Frederick Shisia said the three were trying to steal cattle when residents raised the alarm.

Security personnel and residents pursued them, leading to the arrest of two. The third escaped with an AK-47 rifle.

Police later arrested the man but did not recover the gun.

Two suspects were yesterday lynched and a house set ablaze in Mahuria village in Murang'a South District.

Villagers accused them of committing robberies in the area.
