A TOTAL of 300,000 government employees are to receive laptops, the information and communication technology (ICT) state minister, Alintuma Nsambu, has said.
"We are planning to give a laptop to each of the 300,000 government employees. Payments for them will be deducted from their salaries in five years," Nsambu said.
"The objective of this project is to make sure that civil servants become effective and the Government's efforts go electronic," he said at the opening of an ICT expo organised by uganda telecom (utl) at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
The expo showcased utl's capability in ICT areas that are relevant to the Government.
Nsambu added that the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) was planning set up to computer laboratories in 80 schools countrywide.
He said the schools would also receive 10 computers each.
"The commission will start distributing the computers to the schools throughout the country this week. The schools are supposed to avail rooms for the 10 computers," Nsambu said.
He apologised for the Government's delay to update ministries' websites.
"It is true we have old information on the ministries' websites. But efforts are going on to connect all government departments," Nsambu said.
He said the Chinese had funded the first phase of the project of laying the optic fibre cable. The cable has connected Entebbe, Kampala, Bombo and Jinja.
|
"The next phase, which will connect other parts of the country, will start in July, while the East African Submarine System cable, though being disrupted by politicians, will be completed by 2009."
