Uganda: Man Held Over Hacking 'Lover'

Kampala — A MAN who allegedly hacked his 24-year-old girlfriend, accusing her of having an affair with another man, has been arrested.

Robert Mubangizi was last week detained at Ntungamo Police Station for reportedly injuring Allen Ninsiima, who is admitted at Mbarara referral hospital with machete wounds on the face.

Ninsiima's eyelids, nose, cheeks and forehead are full of stitches which were sewn to cover the deep cuts she sustained.

It could not be easily established whether her eye sight was intact. Ninsiima hails from Kahunga-Ruhaama county in Ntungamo district.

The district chief of criminal investigations, David Mwesigwa, said the woman was brought to the Police by the Kyembaare village LC1 chairman, Yorokamu Byekwaso, who said he found her bleeding profusely in the bush.

Mubangizi, who was found hiding in his uncle's banana plantation, was arrested a day after.

According to Mwesigwa, he would be charged with attempted murder.

Ninsiima has, however, denied being Mubangizi's girlfriend. She told the Police that on the fateful day, he went to her home at around midnight and knocked on the door, asking her to open.

"Robert lives on our village. He knocked on my door at around 12:00am and because I know him, I opened.

"On entry, he demanded money. When I declined to give it to him, he got a panga and cut me," she said.

Ninsiima said she did not know how she ended up in the bush since she became unconscious after the cut.

"But I suspect Robert carried me there to die."
