The coalition on HIV/AIDS comprising civil society organizations and donor partners Sunday commenced the global week of action against the disease in Sierra Leone.

The event started with a candle light procession from the national stadium to the Young Women Christian Association's headquarters, where a memorial service was held to remember those who died of the disease.

Candles were burnt to show the symbol of stigma, discrimination and complacency to the impact of HIV/AIDS.

The week holds leaders accountable on their landmark commitment to fight the disease and the slogan for this year is 'one week one voice. Is the world doing enough to stop AIDS?' This week of action is to call on the world to honour its ambitious promise to stop the needless death of women, men and children.

During the accountability hearing at YWCA on Monday, Dr Momodu Sesay of the ministry of health and sanitation said the prevalence was high among women between the ages of 20-24 and for the men is 35-49, which shows that older men are going for younger girls, thus posing a serious social problem.

He said his ministry was providing treatments and supports to orphans and vulnerable children and that they were also providing free Anti Retroviral Therapy and nutritional support.

Director National Aids Secretariat Dr Brima Kargbo said government has adopted multi-sectoral approach to fight HIV/AIDS by setting up NAS.

He said his secretariat would soon be naming and shaming organizations that have implemented projects without submitting report.
